I personally prefer to rip DVDs to the hard disk in a separate step anyway. The commercial rippers can rip encrypted DVDs fine but many of them choke when the disk is heavily scratched. I try multiple rippers to see which one doest best in such cases. I had maximum success with FAB HDDecrypter's basic version.

Handbrake scores over AVex in supporting multiple output formats as well as multiple platforms(doesn't matter if you use only iPod). The convenience of converting scratch-less DVDs to iPod format in one step is worth ~$30 for many users though.

Handbrake is a great gadget, considering it is free. But you have to convert non-commercial DVD by two steps. I'd rather pay $29 to get a shareware which is capable of converting DVD movies into iPod mp4 in just one step?! I've been a happy AVex DVD to iPod user for over a year. It's all your choice: get iPod mp4 for free in two steps; or pay for a fast ipod converter, and create the iPod mp4 in just one step.
