Steven, many OS2008 users seem to be experiencing problems similar to yours, see all the filed bugs at https://garage.maemo.org/tracker/?atid=880&group_id=214&func=browse
Your best bet is to post a message on <a href="http://www.internettablettalk.com/forums/" rel="nofollow">itT forum</a>.

John, try downloading and installing from here: https://garage.maemo.org/projects/rdesktop/
If you go this route, updates will not be installed automatically.
An excellent resource to find repositories for specific applications is: http://www.gronmayer.com/it/
Browse to that URL from your tablet, select the OS version you want(e.g. OS2008), search for the application(e.g. rDesktop) and add the repositories from the search result. You should then be able to install the application from Application Manager.
@John B rDesktop doesn't come installed in OS 2008 by default, you have to install it. The instructions are in comment #6; I have also updated the post to include the same instructions.
When I tried to follow your instructions it said that i was not allowed to use that program as it was for OS2007 and I am using OS2008.. I did try to follow them BEFORE i posted :)

I installed the rdesktop application on my n800 since it allows me to connect to my home PC (Windows XP pro) in the right resolution (the home system does not allow me to work at 800x480 for a vnc connection, I tried everything from video drivers, registry hacks and tools, powerstrip,... but that's another issue)

And here's the problem. It works wonderfully (far better response than using VNC)... sometimes.
When I connect, 1 out of 5 times it works, the other 4 times the white window (with the connection settings) disappears, and nothing happens. The same thing happens when the N800 has been in power saving: sometimes I get the rdp back, most of the times I get a white window and the rdesktop icon next to it.
When I connect with my portable to the home computer, it works great.

One (or another) thing that is rather strange: I do not use a domain, but a workgroup. No matter what I put in the connection setting for 'domain', (workgroup name, pc name, nothing at all) I can connect using my portable. This is also the case with the N800, but still only about 1 times out of 5. If I change the setting for domain just before connecting, I have the impression I have more chance of getting a connection, but this may be a coincidence.

Does anyone have an idea, i'm a little bit confused here...

FOr different RDP Port Number from the client - use the remote server and add colon then the number 10.10.50.1:3389 or if running on say 80, 10.10.50.1:80. The registry tweak shown here - is to change the server, not affect how a client connects.
